After its first win of the season against Samford in the opening home game, the Nicholls football team will look to add another notch under its belt when it will face Sam Houston Saturday for Family Day. Sam Houston (4- 1, 1-0) is coming off of a 30-14 victory over Northwestern State, and will be looking for a win Saturday in John Guidry Stadium, but, not if the Colonels (1-3, 0-1) have anything to say about it.
After beating Samford, 20-16, the Colonels have seemed to add another dimension to its offense, and that is the addition of a passing game. Son passed for a total of 162 yards against Samford, hooking up with Thurman Lewis five times for 105 yards. Phillip Brock also played a major role in Nicholls passing game, as he caught five passes for 46 yards and one touchdown.
Son also was able to efficiently run the triple option’s ground attack, as the Colonel offense rushed 44 times for a total of 264 yards rushing. Son was accountable for 161 of the total rushing yards.
The Colonel defense played a huge role in the Colonels win against Samford, as it was effective against the run by allowing Samford to tally up 89 yards of rushing. The defense will be looking to have a repeat performance against Sam Houston.
Sam Houston’s defense was also effective against Northwestern’s running game, allowing them to get a total of 57 yards rushing. Northwestern was able to generate 314 passing yards against the Sam Houston defense, although the Samford defense did shut out Northwestern in the first half of play.
Josh Mccowon, Sam Houston’s leading passer, has completed 83 out 123 passes for a total of 990 yards of passing and nine touchdowns.
