After practices are over and the season winds down, four Colonel volleyball players will say goodbye while the rest of the team looks toward next season and early mornings of weight training. The seniors of this 2009 season will suit up in their last competition of the year-the conference tournament. After their competition is over, these seniors will have exit meetings and go through the same routine past seniors have completed.
Starting next year, four girls-Amy Beshir, Manieka Golden, Rachel Spreen and Amy Whitehead-will leave behind their legacy and travel different roads.
Both Beshir and Spreen will no longer be students of Nicholls. While Spreen travels back home to Houston, Texas, Beshir will look into getting into a pharmacy graduate school and, in her words, “wherever I get accepted.”
However, Golden and Whitehead will still have their presence known on campus. While Whitehead will be looking forward to student teaching, Golden will be “going to class, tanning and calling lines at the volleyball game,” a decision that made her senior teammates laugh.
Not getting too far ahead of themselves, the four seniors looked at the accomplishment of getting a bid to the conference tournament for the second consecutive season in a row, something that has never been done in Nicholls’ history.
“It’s like you have been a part of something,” both Spreen and Whitehead said, almost at the same time.
Beshir, Spreen and Whitehead have been a part of the team since they were freshmen. Beshir and Spreen agreed with Whitehead when she said, “It’s been a very tough road, especially our first two years here. We’ve gone from winning a few games in conference to this: going to the tournament back-to-back seasons. It’s nice to see the result of the work we put in.”
These seniors set their eyes on their competition in conference, agreeing that their roughest competition will be against Texas State University.
However, these seniors will have to face the reality that their volleyball careers will be over if they do not pursue any higher levels of playing. To them, it seemed as though their volleyball careers ended so quickly.
The seniors left final remarks to those still on the team.
Jokingly, Golden said, “Put the net up.” Spreen and Golden also agreed with Whitehead, who said, “Play every game as your last because one day it will be.” Spreen said, “Don’t take it for granted.”
These seniors will compete in their final tournament when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the conference tournament.
