Josh Son led the Colonels in rushing and passing, throwing for 104 yards and running for 60 yards, as the Colonel football team fell to the Troy State Trojans 26-0 last Saturday night. Thurman Lewis led the Colonels in receiving yards as he caught one pass for 38 yards, and Isiah Mitchell led the team in receptions with two receptions for 19 yards.
The Colonels were able to move the football, as they had 286 yards of total offense.
Defensively, Todd Rivera led the team with eight total tackles, while James Miller recorded the only sack of the game.
Steve Ellis, Gareth DiBetta, who replaced an injured Lee Rogers, and Chris Thompson each recorded an interception for Nicholls, as the defense held Troy State to 265 yards of total offense.
The Colonel’s defense lost two defensive starters in the first quarter to injuries, as senior defensive back Lee Rogers (sprained ankle) and sophomore linebacker Torrian Thomas (dislocated left elbow) both went down and did not return.
The Trojans (1-2) scored their first touchdown less than three minutes into the game as Demontray Carter rushef for an 11-yard touchdown. Drew Boteler added the extra point to cap the five-play, 40-yard drive, which took 1:15 to complete.
Troy State extended its lead to 14-0 later in the opening quarter as junior Chris Cox scored on a seven-yard run.
After a failed punt attempt gave the Trojans the ball with on the its own 35-yard line, Thompson intercepted a Brock Nutter pass deep in Colonel territory.
Neither team was able to score in the second quarter as DiBetta, a true freshman, recorded the Colonels third interception of the game.
Statistically, the Colonels held their own in the first half as they accumulated 138 yards of total offense, while holding Troy State to 110. Nicholls registered nine first downs in the first half, while the Trojans had seven, and had possession of the football for over 20 minutes.
Troy State was able to get on the scoreboard early in the second half when Nutter connected with LeBarron Black from 25 yards out, which gave the Trojans a 20-0 lead.
Nutter scored the last touchdown of the ball game when he ran the ball in for the score with 12:21 left in the fourth quarter. Colonel linebacker Michael Griffin sacked Nutter for a 10-yard loss on the ensuing play to prevent the two-point conversion.
“We missed a couple of chances to score,” Colonel head coach Daryl Daye said. The bad thing is when you go out there and feel like you should win and you don’t.”
