Over 200 companies have been invited to take part in Career Day. This annual event will be held in the ballroom on Oct. 10. “Planning for this event started since June,” Claudia Aucoin, secretary for career services, said. “Career Day is a good opportunity for students to learn about what different companies are offering” Aucoin siad. A few companies attending the event include Cameco Industries, Rouses Supermarkets, Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, Whitney Bank and State Farm Insurance.
Also, three companies from Houston and Walgreens from Illinois will attend.
Nicholls sponsors Career Day for students, and career services will organize the event. Kristie Tauzin, director of career services, encourages students to talk to representatives from these companies.
Also, Tauzin said students should recognize the importance of dressing professionally. “Students should treat this opportunity as a first interview,” Tauzin said.
These companies may be potential employers for some students who are interested. Students may collect business cards and also turn in resumes. Some of these companies may have applications which students can fill out.
“We have 95 companies coming to this year’s Career Day,” Tauzin said. Many of these companies may have positions available for student employment and are looking for interested students. “They are looking for what Nicholls State students have to offer,” Tauzin said.
Last year, the career office got very good evaluations from the companies. However, many companies said their representatives thought most students were not dressed appropriately.
About 1,000 students attended the event last year and had 100 companies available for them to interact with. Tauzin said she feels strongly about the attendance of students because it helps students start early on their career path. “There are diverse employers for diverse students,” Tauzin said.
At the end of this week, students can pick up a list of the companies that will attend. Tauzin advises students to bring many resumes to give to the representatives.
Toni Scrubbs, general studies senior from Thibodaux, said she thought last year’s career day was a good source for information. Also, it made her more aware of the companies around the area.
Graduate assistant Amy Ponvelle also appreciated the event, which made her aware that career services aided students in getting a job. “We have to start making connections,” Ponvelle said.
