Barbara Kitzman is a sophomore and is majoring in legal assistant studies. Kitzman not only studies at Nicholls but is also an Assistant Housing Director. Kitzman graduated from Edna Karr Magnet School in New Orleans, her hometown, in 1999.
Presently, Kitzman works in Ellender Residence Hall.
“I am an Assistant Housing Director, and I have more duties than the Residence Advisers. I make sure the Residence Advisers do their jobs and make sure everything stays in order, such as maintenance,” Kitzman said.
While listing her duties, Kitzman said, “I enjoy working for the residence halls. It is a good chance to meet everybody and it is a really good experience for incoming freshmen.”
During the semester, the Residence Halls Association puts on programs for the residents. The programs can include movies, a talent shows and many different activities.
“I think the programs are satisfying, because there are different programs throughout the semester, and if a person does not like one program, there is always another program that may fit their personality,” Kitzman said.
As a result of Kitzman’s participation, she has received a few awards.
“I have received the many awards from the RHA for programming, and I also won the Residence Adviser Shining Star Award for being the best Residence Adviser in my first year,” Kitzman said.
In addition to going to school and working in the Residence Halls, Kitzman is also a member of the Army Naional Guard.
“In the National Guard, it is expected of me to do what the males can do. I work at the headquarters for the National Guard in Louisiana. The headquarters is over all the National Guards in Louisiana,” Kitzman said.
Throughout the last two weeks Kitzman said she has experienced a lot of pressure from the tragic events in New York and Washington.
“On September 12, I was told that I would be leaving on the 13th to possible go to war, and so I told my friends and family good-bye. However, on the 13th I received a call before I left that I was not being called out. Although, it is highly possible for me to be called out at any time,” Kitzman said.
Although Kitzman said she is currently worried about this she still has many goals for herself that she wants to focus on.
“My school goals are that I first wanted to be an English major, but I changed it to legal assistant studies. I also want to go for my bachelor’s degree in government, and eventually, I want to be a judge,” Kitzman said.
Kitzman said her personal goals outside of school are to retire in 20 years from the National Guard. She also said that she wants to become a Master Sergeant before her retirement.
Moreover, Kitzman also enourages students from her experiences.
“I encourage students to becomes a member of the R. H. A. because you get to know a lot of stuff, especially if you live here. I encourage students to participate in the National Guard only if you can handle it and the stresses that come with it,” Kitzman said.
Kitzman also said she feels highly about Nicholls.
“I define Nicholls as a small school with many different types of people that makes it special, because other schools are crowded and you can’t meet a lot of the people. Nicholls is a community of people,” Kitzman said.
