Despite some bad luck and numerous technical difficulties, Nicholls’ on-campus radio station, KNSU, is still on the air and reaching a larger audience than ever before. Over the course of a few years, the station has dealt with a lot of equipment damage, including its previous antenna being struck by lightening twice, confining KNSU to a limited audience, only reaching about half the Thibodaux area.
Since then, the station has taken the necessary steps and raised the funds to purchase updated equipment, allowing it to reach a broader audience.
“The funding for these upgrades was raised by student self-assessed fees, at about $3 per student, and through underwriting for local businesses,” Lance Arnold, KNSU adviser, said.
The station can now be heard throughout the Thibodaux, Houma and Raceland area thanks to the upgrade.
The equipment cost KNSU about $25,000, and Arnold said he hopes to continue with phase two, which could entail a wider music selection.
The KNSU station itself also received a facelift. Not only does it have updated technology, but it also has an new look.
“The renovations for the station are almost complete and with fresh paint and new couches, they are hoping to create a more comfortable news and entertainment environment,” Josh McKnight, station manager, said.
KNSU is going to host a welcome back day Tuesday, Feb. 12. The event will include pizza, CDs, stickers and more, and it will be open to the public.
