The University Police station is undergoing a move from its present location at the corner of Ardoyne and Madewood drives to Calecas Hall, which is also currently undergoing renovations, Mike Davis, assistant vice president for administration, said. The move, with an estimated cost of $200,000, will be paid for mostly through the sale of bonds, Davis said.
This move will be beneficial to both the police department and students.
“This move will place the University Police station in a location very close to residence halls,” Davis said. “It will give the department better coverage of a very important part of campus.”
The building that currently serves as the University Police station will undergo renovations and become a convenience store and food court area for students, Davis said.
This transformation should be a benefit to students who have classes located a long distance from Bollinger Memorial Student Union, Davis said.
“Classes are so long, our breaks are so short and vending machines steal the money,” Katie Butts, nursing sophomore from Cut Off, said. “This would make access to snacks so much quicker and actually possible since there isn’t enough time to walk across campus to the Union.”
The project is expected to be completed within a couple of months, although there has been a few road bumps along the way.
“The old residence hall which will be housing the police station has been gutted, but due to an asbestos problem, the renovations’ estimated completion date has been pushed back,” project manager Stan Silverii said.
