More than 8,000 invitations were sent out to invite students, prospective students and their families, to Family Day Oct. 13. Family Day gives students, family, faculty and staff the opportunity to have fun together. The event will take place next to John L. Guidry Stadium.
Festival events start at noon and last until 3:15p.m. There will be live music, booths, games and food. The live band “Fire and Ice” will be the entertainment for the day. People are encouraged not to bring food to the event, food will be sold. Also, a soccer game, which is part of the Family Day events will start at 1:30 p.m.
After the festival events, there will be a football game in the stadium. Before the game begins, any non-Nicholls student interested in attending the game can purchase a ticket for a reduced price of $5 between 1 and 2:30p.m
Mike Delaune, director of university relations, encourages everyone to participate.
“Fete de la Famille” is the French theme for Family Day. “The theme was established in the mid 80’s,” Delaune said. It represents Louisiana’s French heritage.
Family Day began in the ballroom when just a few hundred people attended. Every year since, the festival has grown. Now the event is held outside, where the thousands who attend can be accommodated.
A committee composed of students, faculty and staff organizes the event. Brenda Haskins is Chairman of the 21 member committee who help this event be a success.
There will be a Pow wow hosted by the Houma’s Indian Nation in conjunction with Family Day. This group of Indians will be dressed in costumes and entertain Family Day guests.
Christal Lewis, mass communication senior from Marrero, said she enjoyed Family Day when she attended the event with her family. “There were many activity booths both my family and I could get involved in,” Lewis said.
Also, she said there were many different organizations with booths that had information that anyone who wanted to look at could pick it up. “My highlight of the day was being with my family, being with friends and meeting their family members (as well),” Lewis said.
Dress will be casual for the event. “I encourage students to invite all of their family to this event,” Delaune said.”
