Dashboard Confessional, Hawthorne Heights, Bright Eyes; don’t get me wrong, I love these bands, but come on! What are they so sad about? I know love is rough and all, but really? All this emotional stuff, better known as emo music, has flooded the airwaves in the past few years with all the mellow beats and broken hearts.
Their sound, though very unique, isn’t the first wave of music that comes from the broken heart.
Throughout the years, many bands have come out with songs of heartbreak and lost loves. Music may always be changed, but the pain of heartbreak never changes, apparently.
Let’s look at Radiohead’s “Lurgee,” with lyrics such as, “I feel better now that you’re gone,” and “I got better; I got strong.” It makes a perfect anti-love song.
The Gratful Dead’s “Hell in a Bucket” is another good one: “You analyze me, pretend to despise me, You laugh when I stumble and fall. There may come a day I will dance on your grave. If unable to dance, I will crawl across it. Unable to dance, I’ll still crawl.”
That is a little harsh; Bob Weir must have really had his heart stomped on by someone. You know, I guess without all this pain and loss for these artists we would never have the music we do today.
So who says being a musician is an easy job. You have to go through heartbreak just to write good songs.
