The Thibodaux City Council voted on two ordinances Tuesday prohibiting parking along Bowie Road and changing the speed limit from 35 to 25 mph. The ordinances were introduced at the council meeting April 1 after members of the University’s Parking Policy Committee unanimously voted to prohibit parking on the east side of Bowie Road. It also passed a motion to suggest to the administration the speed limit be reduced.
According to Thibodaux City Council’s agenda and public hearings information, the first ordinance (Sec. 20-13) states there is to be no parking on Bowie Road from LA Highway 1 to the Arpent Canal. The subsequent ordinance (Sec. 20-19(A.)) states no vehicle under any circumstance shall be driven more than 25 mph on Bowie Road from the first curve south of LA Highway 1 to the Arpent Canal.
The speed limit ordinance also restated that the speed limit of other roads around campus will remain at 15 mph.
University Police Chief Craig Jaccuzzo said in the Nov. 11 issue of The Nicholls Worth that parking on Bowie Road is unsafe because the road is narrow and has an inclined curve with no clearance.
“Major accidents have occurred on Bowie Road, all resulting in injuries and vehicular damages,” Jaccuzzo said.
Eugene Dial, vice president of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, said parking on the side of the road would also create problems during construction of the residence halls.
“There is plenty of sufficient parking on campus,” Dial also said in the Nov. 11 article. “Students who park along Bowie Road will have no problem finding other parking lots available to them.”
Dial also said parking along Highway 1, and any other major state highway is illegal.
