The Colonels baseball team continued their downward slide being swept by the Central Arkansas Bears in all three games of the weekend series in Conway, Arkansas. The Colonels (6-29, 2-13 SLC) won two of the team’s last 15 games, while Central Arkansas (18-15, 6-9 SLC) has won five of the last seven.
With the three consecutive losses, the Colonels remained at the bottom of the eastern division of the Southland Conference.
In the first game of the series Friday, the Colonels and Bears took the game into extra innings; however, the Bears broke the deadlock with an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th to claim the 8-7 win.
The Colonels had 12 hits with two errors in the contest, while Central Arkansas had 11 hits and two errors.
Sophomore pitcher Dale Dickerson took the loss for the Colonels and dropped to 0-3 on the season. Freshman pitcher Reece Cross picked up the win for the Bears and improved to 2-2 on the season.
In the second game of the series Saturday, the Colonels’ woes continued, and the Bears dropped Nicholls 14-4.
Junior pitcher Jeremy Cloud picked up his second win on the season, while Colonel senior pitcher Bryan Myers fell to 1-2 on the season. Cloud pitched 6.2 innings allowing only four runs on six hits.
The Bears scored in every inning of the game except the fourth and took advantage of the Colonels’ pitching with nine walks.
In the final game of the series Sunday, Central Arkansas Bears took advantage of two Nicholls errors in the fifth inning and claimed an 8-5 victory.
Nicholls appeared to have control of the game with a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth; however, UCA scored four runs on three hits and never looked back.
With one out and no men on base, UCA junior first baseman Payton Seelinger hit a fly ball that ended up being the game maker. The Colonels’ center fielder had an error that cost the Colonels loaded bases. The second error was on a wild pitch. UCA scored four runs following the error.
Senior pitcher Matt Whitaker (3-3) earned the win for the Bears, while freshmen pitcher Seth Webster (1-4) took the loss for Nicholls.
The Colonels will host Northwestern State University Demons in a weekend series starting tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
