The Colonels baseball team reflects on their current nine-game winning streak with that of the 1986 season’s 12-game winning streak. The 1986 season’s winning stretch is the longest winning streak the Colonels have held.
Tuesday’s 7-0 win over the Generals of Louisiana State University-Alexandria put the Colonels at a nine-game winning streak, the longest since 1986.
After the Rajun Cajuns of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette swept the Colonels in the first three-game series of the season, the Colonels pulled wins over Bryant University, University of Tennessee-Martin, Houston Baptist University, Arkansas-Monticello, Southern University and most recently, LSU-Alexandria.
If the Colonels are able to sweep the Cardinals of Lamar in the opening of Southland Conference play this weekend, the Colonels will tie the 12-game winning streak.
Last season, the Colonels were only able to win 19 of their 51 games overall and only nine of the 32 SLC match-ups.
So far this season, the Colonels have already tied the amount of games won in conference and improved their .373 season winning average to a .750 average thus far.
The Colonels look to surpass the 12-game winning streak with a repeat win over the Tigers of Louisiana State University, the 2009 NCAA National Champions.
Last season, the Colonels upset number one ranked Tigers of Louisiana State University.
The Colonels threw eight pitchers in nine innings of play to capitalize on a 3-1 lead over LSU to silence Tiger fans and leave everyone with their jaws dropped.
“After we brought in those three runs in the fourth, our pitchers came in and did their job,” head coach Chip Durham said after last season’s game against LSU. “That’s what our club is all about-playing defense, pitching and scrapping together a few runs. If we can do that, we’ve got a chance to win a few games.”
The Colonels will open up SLC play as well as try to tie the 12-game winning streak of 1986 when they take on the Cardinals in a three-game series. First pitch for Friday is set for 6 p.m., for Saturday 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
