Tonight, another round of moonmen will be handed out in New York City. MTV will hold its annual Video Music Awards in the Metropolitan Opera House.
Techno artist Fatboy Slim garnered the most nominations when they were announced in July. His video for “Weapon Of Choice,” which features actor Christopher Walken dancing his way through an empty hotel, is up for nine awards tonight including Best Video of the Year.
Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” and *NSYNC’s “Pop” are each up for six awards. Both videos are filled with special effects. The team of Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink also got six nominations for “Lady Marmalade.”
British singer Dido saw two of her videos combine for six total nominations. She is up for Best Female Video for “Thankyou” and got five nominations for “Stan,” her collaboration with controversial rapper Eminem.
Eminem, Destiny’s Child and U2 got five nominations apiece.
The biggest award of the night is Best Video of the Year. Fatboy Slim will compete against Eminem and Dido, Missy Elliott, “Lady Marmalade,” Janet Jackson’s “All For You” and U2’s “Beautiful Day.”
MTV viewers can participate in two different categories this year. As usual, video lovers can vote for their favorite Viewers’ Choice Award nominee.
This year’s nominees are Backstreet Boys’ “The Call,” Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women Part 1,” Eve’s “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” featuring Gwen Stefani, Limp Bizkit’s “My Way,” Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me” featuring City Spud and *NSYNC’s “Pop.”
Viewers can also vote for the first-ever MTV2 Viewers’ Choice Award. These nominees were culled from the video rotation on MTV’s sister channel.
They are Craig David’s “Fill Me In,” Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood,” India.Arie’s “Video,” Jurassic 5’s “Quality Control,” Alicia Keys’s “Fallin'” and Mudvayne’s “Dig.”
Viewers can log onto www.mtv.com to vote for their favorite in both categories.
The telecast will be hosted by comedian Jamie Foxx. It will also feature musical performances from Missy Elliott, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule, Linkin Park, *NSYNC, Britney Spears, Staind and U2.
Alien Ant Farm, City High, Eve and Wyclef Jean will perform at the pre-show.
