Sophomore third baseman Kayla Watterson currently leads the Colonels with a .356 batting average and has appeared in all 31 games, making 30 starts.No player is able to get on base every time they step in the batter’s box; however, Watterson leads the team with a .510 on-base percentage, which has allowed her to plate 14 teammates and score 11 times.
Watterson leads the team with 18 walks and has been hit five times by pitches this season.
Watterson has a .923 fielding percentage from third base, recording 52 assists and 32 put outs.
Watterson took time out from practices and school to talk about softball.
Q. What do you attribute your success at the plate to this year?
A. “I put in a lot of extra time this season toward focusing on my bat in order to improve.”
Q. What do you do before games to get ready?
A. “I zone out everything that is around me and focus on our next opponent.”
Q. How has this year been different from last year?
A. “I was extremely nervous last year, but this year I have relaxed and just enjoyed playing the game.”
Q. What is your most embarrassing moment here at Nicholls?
A. “I’ve taken a few falls on the field. However, the most embarrassing one was definitely off the field. I tripped once on the way to class, and I took a complete flip on my way down.”
Q. What is your favorite thing about college softball?
A. “My favorite thing about college softball is the bond that I share with my teammates and coaches.”
Q. What coach or player has had the biggest influence on you at Nicholls? Why?
A. “Coach Parsons [current head softball coach for Nicholls] has been the biggest influence because she pushes me to reach my full potential.”
Q. How do you balance school and travel?
A. “I get a lot of work done on the bus and in the hotel for away games.”
Q. What do you plan on doing in the future?
A. “I am planning on being a speech pathologist.”
Q. Do you have superstitions for softball?
A. ” I really don’t have any superstitions.
