The Nicholls State football team continues to prepare for the 2010 season with spring practice. On April 1, the Colonels completed the first week of spring practice after taking an 11-day break before suiting up again.
The Colonels spent three days practicing at Manning Field built by Astroturf in John L. Guidry Stadium and did not venture to the grass practice fields until they returned from spring break.
“I’m pleased with what I am seeing so far from the student-athletes,” head coach Charlie Stubbs said. “We have a long way to go, but everyone has the right attitude, which is a huge plus.”
The coaching staff has been emphasizing a lot in the passing game on both sides of the ball with individual route running, some man-to-man, seven-on-seven and passes protection drills.
“So far, it has gone very well, and we have really pushed these young men pretty hard, considering that we haven’t been able to put on pads,” Stubbs said. “Perhaps the biggest challenge will be mental because it is all new to them, and they will have to learn quickly. Plus, we are emphasizing more of a passing style offense, which requires a lot of teaching. I believe that we are capable of accomplishing a lot in spring practice, as long as we progress mentally and not get discouraged.”
Stubbs has been pleased with the reception from the student-athletes. Dealing with a break, however, might affect the Colonels’ forward progress.
“The break really doesn’t concern me all that much,” Stubbs said. “Plus, a break like this leaves the door open for the student-athletes to show a little leadership and pride in themselves, meaning that they can do the workout programs given to them and show up ready to get back in the swing of things when they return, or they can be out of shape and find themselves further down the depth chart. Like I have said before, laziness and excuses will not be tolerated.”
The Colonels will continue their spring practice after a long spring break.
