Students searching for some extra income for the fall semester need look no further than the Student Publications and Printing building on Ardoyne Dr. The Nicholls Worth is hiring students from all majors, classifications and levels of experience for the fall semester.
Students who do not have any experience, but wish to learn something about media may apply.
The returning staff works closely with new staff members to ease them into the fast-paced life of print media.
The publication is entirely student-run, but has an adviser, Lesley Marcello, who stands ready to lend a helping hand when staff members encounter a problem.
While working for the newspaper is a paid campus job, students with other jobs are invited to volunteer their time and talents. The Nicholls Worth has three volunteer staff members working with the 27 paid staff members in ads, photography and news-editorial.
Several positions are available. Applications may be picked up at the Student Publications and Printing building between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Among those positions are reporters, sports editor, sports reporters and photographers.
Reporters are entry-level writing positions. Reporters are given one assignment to begin, and once they feel able to take on more stories, they receive more assignments.
They are not forced to take on more stories than they feel ready to take. Reporters are paid $9.50 per published story, plus minimum wage for attending the weekly staff meetings.
Once a reporter shows improvement and ambition, he can be promoted to the next level of writer, staff writer. Staff writers receive more stories, higher caliber-stories and minimum wage for however long it takes to write the story, plus for the time it would take to attend a meeting or other event.
Sports reporters are similar to news reporters, with one exception: they cover all sporting events on campus. There is also a sports writer position available, just as there is a staff writer.
The sports editor is responsible for assigning and editing stories written by the sports staff. He is also responsible for designing and laying out his section each week.
Knowledge of Quark XPress is a plus, but is not mandatory, as the design and layout editor is available to assist with the section.
This position pays minimum wage.
All writers should bring samples of their work.
Photographers are also needed. They must supply their own cameras, but The Nicholls Worth supplies film. They also work for La Pirogue, the campus yearbook.
Photographers are paid per published photo in The Nicholls Worth, and per accepted photo for La Pirogue.
Photography applicants should bring samples of their work.
Interviews will be conducted before final exams.
