In the Lady Colonels final home series of the season, Nicholls was swept by the University of Texas-San Antonio in Southland Conference play over the weekend at Lady Colonel Diamond. Nicholls is 20-32 overall and 4-20 in the SLC.
Game 1: UTSA 12 Nicholls 4
To open the series Saturday, Nicholls fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning, but answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning.
Leading 3-2 in the top of the third inning, UTSA scored twice in the frame, three times in the fourth and sixth and once in the fifth.
Lady Colonel starter, Duffi Matherne lasted until the fourth, when she was replaced by Christina Hanson.
Shauna Emola was the only Lady Colonel to connect on two hits, as she was 2-of-3 with a double .
UTSA outhit Nicholls 12-6 and capitalized on four Lady Colonel errors.
Game 2: UTSA 8 Nicholls 2
Game two of the doubleheader on Saturday night, saw Nicholls fall behind again, but this time the Lady Colonels were down 6-0 after three innings and could not recover.
Nicholls managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, on a triple by Kyna Boyer and a single by Nicole Stewart.
Fallon Cancienne was tagged with the loss for Nicholls, while Hanson and Lori Blanco also saw action on the mound.
Julie Rodriguez was the only Lady Colonel with more than one hit as she was 2-for-4 at the plate.
In the game, Nicholls was outhit 8-6 and left six runners on base, while the Roadrunners stranded nine.
Game 3: UTSA 8 Nicholls 3
In Stewart’s final home game as a Lady Colonel senior, Nicholls fell behind 5-3 after two innings en route to the five-run loss.
Blanco got her first-ever start for Nicholls and lasted two innings, allowing five runs and six hits.
The Lady Colonels trailed 1-0 after the top of the first, but Nicholls came back in the bottom of the frame, when Jill Chabert connected on a homer to right field that scored Kyna Boyer and Nicholls held a short-lived 2-1 advantage.
After the Roadrunners put up four runs in their half of the second, Nicholls answered with a run when Rodriguez drove home Jen Ortego.
Rodriguez was 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
UTSA sealed the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
In the game, Nicholls was outhit 12-7, and left four runners on base, while the Roadrunners left seven.
For Nicholls, Rodriguez and Boyer had two hits each, while Chabert’s homer was her team-leading third of the season.
Nicholls at Southeastern
The Lady Colonels will wrap up their season when they travel to Hammond for a three-game SLC series against Southeastern Louisiana University.
The two teams will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, before closing the series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“We match up well against Southeastern,” Lady Colonel head coach Pattie Holthaus said. “If we can take away the errors, we can stay in the games.”
