Head women’s basketball coach Mark Cook recently announced the 2007-08 Lady Colonels’ basketball schedule.
The women’s basketball team will play a total of ten non-conference opponents in the preseason before starting conference play against Northwestern State University Jan. 10.
Five out of the ten non-conference games are against Louisiana schools, which Cook said he believes is going to be better for the team.
“I think our schedule is much more balanced and favorable this year. It gives us a chance to be more competitive in preseason play which will help us become better before conference play games start,” Cook said.
The Lady Colonels will open the season at home when they face Dilliard University Nov. 13.
Following the home opener, the team will go on a three-week road stretch to face Tennessee State University, University of New Orleans and Wichita State University, Cook’s alma mater, and partake in the University of New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Lady Colonels will begin this December with a home game against Prairie View A&M University. Then the team will travel to Alcorn State University and to the University of Louisiana Lafayette. The team will close December out with a match against Centenary Dec. 20 in Stopher Gym.
Nicholls will play Conference USA champion Tulane University Jan. 2 before tackling their Southland Conference opener at Northwestern State Jan. 10.
The Lady Colonels will play eight conference home games this season.
The team returns All-SLC senior guard Katherine Plummer who tied the school record for assists in a game last season.
Plummer started in all the Lady Colonels 2006-07 games and led the team in assists with 115 and steals with 52.
Three other seniors who return for the Lady Colonels include Nikina Hill, Kellie Johnson and Heather Knights, who received a medical redshirt last season.
The team also returns three juniors and three sophomores, all of whom have seen significant playing time in their previous seasons.
Cook said he was excited about the season and said the team had potential for a successful season.
“We have enough experience on the team, we just need to change that experience into positive production on the court,” Cook said. “If we accomplish that, I think we can be very good this year.
