The Lady Colonel tennis team dropped a 6-1 non-conference decision at the University of New Orleans Wednesday afternoon. Nicholls is now 3-13 overall and 1-9 in the Southland Conference.
The Lady Colonels are competing with four experienced players and are forced to default at the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 6 singles match.
Against UNO, Nicholls lost both doubles matches and picked up one singles win.
After losing the first set 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Sandra Gloria came back to beat Ana Santoro 6-4 in the second set and 10-6 in the tie breaker.
“I was really proud of the way Sandra played. She had an excellent performance against UNO,” First-year Lady Colonel head coach Robert Flink said.
On Sunday morning, the Lady Colonels hosted SLC opponent McNeese State and fell 6-1.
Although Gloria and Virginie Villani fell to McNeese’s No. 1 doubles team of Yvonne Bresler and Berenice Ferrer 8-2, the tandem of Rachel Wade and Catherine Gauthier took the No. 2 doubles match 9-8.
In the No. 2 singles match, Villani lost 6-3 in the first set and came back to secure the only Lady Colonels singles victory, with a 7-6 second set win and a 10-8 victory in the tie breaker.
In SLC play against Stephen F. Austin, Saturday in Thibodaux, the lone victory for the Lady Colonels came when Villani posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sarah Osborn in the No. 2 singles match.
“Virginie played big in both singles and doubles on Saturday. She put forth a good effort and fought really hard,” Flink said.
In the No. 3 singles match Wade split her first two sets 6-7, 6-0 and lost in the tie breaker 10-6.
“Rachel also fought hard against Stephen F. Austin. I was pleased with her play,” Flink said.
Also against Stephen F. Austin, Villani and Gloria took an 8-4 doubles win, while Gauthier and Wade fell 8-5 in the No. 2 doubles match.
“I really feel like Virginie was a bright spot in the weekend. She really fought for each game and stepped it up to take those wins,” Flink said.
The Lady Colonels will complete their season today when they face Southern University of Baton Rouge at 2 p.m. on the Nicholls tennis courts.
The match will mark the end of a Nicholls career for seniors Gauthier, Gloria and Villani.
