With a 5-2 win over Southern University at Baton Rouge April 5 on the Nicholls tennis courts, the Lady Colonels finished their season with an overall record of 4-12. “I was really happy that the team went out with a win,” first-year Lady Colonel head coach Robert Flink said.
The Lady Colonels went through the entire season with four experienced players, instead of the normal six used in collegiate tennis.
In each of its matches, Nicholls entered down two points in singles play and behind one in doubles matches.
Against Southern, Lady Colonel Catherine Gauthier beat Nicole Thomas 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles match, while Virginie Villani downed Ikives Brown in the No. 2 match and picked up another point for Nicholls.
“It was great for the team to finish the season with a win, and it was great for me to finish my carrer with a win,” Gauthier said.
In the No. 3 singles match, Sandra Gloria kept Nicholls going with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jerlanda Stewart.
At the No. 4 spot, Rachel Wade helped the Lady Colonel cause with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Kahyi Session 6-1, 6-1.
In the No. 5 singles match, Lady Colonel Emily Guidry picked up a game in a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Carla Alexander.
Nicholls was forced to default the No. 6 singles match and the No. 3 doubles match.
At No. 1 doubles Villani and Gloria beat Brown Session 8-0, while in the second doubles match Wade and Gauthier blanked Alexander and Stewart 8-0.
The match marked the final time in Lady Colonel uniforms for seniors Gauthier, Gloria and Villani.
“I was really excited to see the seniors go out with a win,” Flink said.
“Coaching my first year at Nicholls was a great experience.”
“It is my dream job, and I am looking forward to next season.”
