In the final tournament of the fall semester, the Lady Colonels golf team made history with its first individual first place win at the Troy University Women’s Invitational at Arrowhead Country Club. Since the inception of the golf team in 2001 the Lady Colonel have never had an individual place first. Senior Daniele Dunlop won her first collegiate tournament title firing a (76-74, 150) to shoot a six over par for the two-day event. When asked about her performance Dunlop said she was very excited to be the first Lady Colonel to win an individual title.
“I did not realize I was the first to win an individual title, and when the scores were posted, I was excited that I had won. It is an honor to represent Nicholls State University as the first women golfer to win the individual title” Dunlop said.
Dunlop said she felt like the 5,273 yard, par 72 course played moderately difficult and she had the opportunity to play aggressively.
“Since the greens were receptive to holding shots, I had the opportunity to fire at the pins” Dunlop said. ” I was pleased with my performance, but I missed some opportunities attempting putts within the seven-foot range.”
Since the Troy University Invitational was the last tournament for the Lady Colonel’s golf team, Dunlop said she will have plenty time to work on her game until classes resume in January 2008.
“When I head back home in Canada for the holidays I plan on working at an indoor facility to stay out of the cold weather” Dunlop said. Next season will be the last time she hits the links as a Lady Colonel because Dunlop graduates in May 2008. After graduation, Dunlop plans to stay in Thibodaux to pursue her MBA.
The Lady Colonels are optimistic about the upcoming spring golf season, and all the players are going to be returning. Also, the Lady Colonels finished second shooting a combined team round of 616, five strokes behind Jacksonville state.
