With a new year comes new music. This year there are a few new artists, as well as some of the artists you know and love, making better, more exciting music. Another thing you need to watch out for are good soundtracks coming out or that are already out. Starting in the Hip-Hop/Rap genre anything Lil’ Wayne touches becomes gold, or in the music industry, platinum. With the release of “The Carter III: The Leak” arriving on Feb. 15, Lil’ Wayne has been busy doing collaborations with many artists and putting out an EP, entitled “The Leak.”
His EP was titled “The Leak” because four songs on his upcoming album “The Carter III” were leaked out to the public before the album hit stores. He added four more songs to the album in addition to the four already leaked into the public, and added “The Leak” to the end of the title of the album, making it an EP.
Also, for those of you who watch “The Boondocks” on Cartoon Network, Lil’ Wayne did the voice for one of the characters.
When it comes to soundtracks this year, I know it’s early, but I think I may have found the best. Not only is “Juno” an amazing movie, its soundtrack is just the same.
With tracks from Cat Power, Belle and Sebastian, The Velvet Underground and The Kinks, this album would have already made number one on my list.
To top it off, the soundtrack has Sonic Youth covering “Superstar” by the Carpenters.
Other songs by Kimya Dawson of the Moldy Peaches are also some of my favorites from this whole album. I find the only Soundtrack that comes close to this one is “The Royal Tenenbaums.”
When it comes to Alternative/Rock, I have to bring up Kimya Dawson again. With her six songs on the “Juno” soundtrack, it’s almost like a small album for her.
Her songs range from playful and fun to very meaningful and harsh. She criticizes everything from love and depression all the way to the failures of our president.
Just a reminder to all those 311 fans out there, if you do not have tickets to the concert on 3/11 day yet, you might want to get on that! They just opened up another section in the New Orleans Arena, and they expect to sell that out as well.
