After suffering a 2-1 extra inning loss to Louisiana Tech in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday night, the Lady Colonel softball team responded with a 4-1 win in game two. Nicholls is now 16-18 overall and 2-10 in the Southland Conference.
Game 1: Tech 2 Nicholls 1
In the first game, the Lady Colonels jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning, after Jen Ortego walked and scored on a double by Julie Rodriguez.
The Lady Techsters answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth. With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Louisiana Tech grabbed the win with a run scoring single.
Game 2: Nicholls 4 Tech 1
The Lady Colonels put up single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings and added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to cap the win.
Nicholls got its run in the fourth when Nicole Stewart’s sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez from third.
The Lady Colonels added another run in the fifth when Jill Chabert, who reached on a single, scored on an error.
Nicholls got its final runs when Amy Pitre doubled, to score Sarah Eads and Lynette Kokemor sealing the win in the seventh.
Duffi Matherne pitched the entire doubleheader and got the win in game two, after giving up one run on nine hits and striking out two.
Matherne improved to 9-14 on the year.
Over the weekend, Nicholls won its first SLC series of the season by taking two-of-three from Sam Houston State.
Nicholls dropped the series opener on Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader 2-0, before winning two in a row by scores of 1-0 and 3-1.
In the opening game of the series, Nicholls failed to score as Sam Houston State scored a pair of unearned runs in the second to take the win, even though Nicholls outhit the Lady Bearkats 5-4.
In the second game of the day, Nicholls got a run scoring single from Kyna Boyer and some solid pitching from Matherne, to take the win.
The rubber game of the series saw Nicholls take a 3-1 win. Nicholls got a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the seventh for the victory.
Fallon Cancienne picked up the win after six innings of work.
On March 15, the Lady Colonels swept Centenary College in a doubleheader 7-5, 6-1 in Shreveport.
Trailing 4-1 in the opening game, Nicholls scored four runs in the third to take the lead for good. Jen Sladky connected on a bases-loaded double to give Nicholls the 5-4 advantage.
Earlier in the inning, Kristi Blanchard recorded a run-scoring double to open the scoring. Nicholls added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Cancienne worked five-plus innings and recorded the win.
In the nightcap, Matherne threw the entire game and got the win. Nicholls scored a run in the fourth inning, another in the fifth and added four in the sixth.
Chabert hit a three-run homerun in the contest and finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Boyer was also 2-for-4, which included a double.
The Lady Colonels will next be in action at the Lady Cajun Invite this weekend in Lafayette.
