The Student Government Association administration that will take office in the summer hopes to work hard to be open to students’ needs and desires while recreating its image.Because the positions of president and vice president each had only one candidate, those candidates won by default.
Brent Callais, government senior from Cut Off, will be SGA president, and Nicole Perero, psychology junior from New Iberia, will be vice president.
“Next year is looking very bright,” Callais said.
He said he wishes to print new flyers that will no longer refer to the SGA as “the SGA,” but, rather address its student readers in the second person.
“We want it to be `your SGA did this, your SGA did that,'” Callais said.
“We really want to enforce that this is their SGA. They’re our bosses. We’re really going to fight hard for them. We’re only in these places because they put us where we are.”
Callais and Perero both said they think effective communication is essential.
“We’re going to definitely try to improve our image,” Callais said.
“My main thing is for the students to feel comfortable enough to come to the SGA with what they want from us. I want them to know that our door is open and we are there for them,” Perero said.
Callais said there are several things the administration wishes to accomplish immediately upon taking office.
He has yet to decide on his remaining executive board members.
“We’re still taking applications until the end of April”.
The positions of treasurer, director of public relations and director of student rights and grievances will be filled in the summer, after the applicants receive their final grades.
“We’re also forming a presidential advisory council,” Callais said.
Plans for the council call for presidents and vice-presidents of various organizations to meet often and discuss their feelings on pertinent issues.
Callais and Perero both have executive experience. Callais is the current vice president and Perero is the current student rights and grievances director.
Both said they want to address the “misconceptions” students have about the SGA.
“There is nothing that they can’t come talk to us about. I’m not promising we can solve all problems, but we can try the best we can,” Perero said.
“I want to make their experience here the best it can be.”
