Jamie Medine set a new school record in the 10,000-meter run, over the weekend at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette. Medine’s time of 48:03.98 was good enough for third place, and she set her second school record of the year. Two weeks ago, Medine set the Nicholls mark in the 5,000-meter run.
“She is a hard worker, and brings spirit to the team,” Colonel head track coach Matt Pantusa said. “Its very important that she is out here working, because the other runners see that hard work does pay off.”
Pantusa said Medine would not be traveling with the team for this upcoming weekend’s meet in Memphis, Tenn., because she needs to rest.
“Its tough on any runner to run a 10K one week and compete the next,” Pantusa said. “I think she just needs to rest.”
Colonel distance runners Mikael Larsson and Kevin Zwezdaryk participated in the men’s version of the 10,000-meter run.
Larsson took the race with a time of 32:30.38, and Zwezdaryk finished just four spots back, clocking in at 35:26.31.
Pantusa said he was pleased with his runners’ finishes in their first 10,000-meter run of the year.
“It was the first time our distance runners participated in the 10,000-meter run,” Pantusa said. “We usually don’t participate in the 10k during the season, so I’m glad we finished the way we did.”
The women’s 4X400-meter relay team broke its school record set earlier in the year, running a time of 4:07.98 and placing tenth.
Emma Sjorgen, Johanna Sjorgen, Mercedes James and Caroline Hulden were all a part of the record-setting team.
Hulden also broke her Nicholls record in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 59.72 to go along with her seventh place finish.
Kristy Mire was another Lady Colonel that set a school record in Lafayette.
Mire broke her own mark in the javelin by throwing 170 ft. 59 in to take third place.
“When they measured it, her face lit up, because she knew she set the record,” Pantusa said.
Pantusa said he liked his women’s team’s strong showing in Lafayette, as they managed to set four new records.
“Overall it was a good, productive weekend on the women’s side,” Pantusa said.
The Nicholls track team has set 15 records this year, as compared to the 14 the team set last year.
“This just shows how competitive the team is,” Pantusa said. “And to think that we’re only about halfway through the season.”
Jamaal James took first place for the second consecutive meet in the 400-meter dash, after running a time of 47.78.
Farren Clark also improved on his personal best time from last week’s meet in Hattiesburg, Miss., in the 800-meter run.
Clark’s time of 1:53.07 was good enough to earn him a third place finish.
“Farren Clark ran awesome this week,” Pantusa said. “But he still needs to bring his time a little more, if he wants to break the school record.”
The Colonels will travel to Memphis, Tenn., this weekend to participate in the University of Memphis Invitational.
