Nicholls’ women’s basketball season will be in full swing this year with the first home game at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 13 against Dillard University. During the 2006 season the team finished in ninth place at conference and had a 7-20 overall record. Head coach Mark Cook said he looks to improve on last year’s performance and believes the Lady Colonels should have a great opportunity this season to showcase the player’s talent.
Last season was a very difficult season plagued with injuries. With the help of senior standouts Jamie Octave and Claire Barry, the Lady Colonels managed to win seven games. Both players played exceptionally last season and placed in the top 25 in many categories such as scoring, three pointers made, and rebounding.
Octave and Barry will not be back this season as both have graduated; however, Barry will be on the sideline as an assistant coach.
The Lady Colonels look to improve last year’s standings with new players and help from the veteran squad. Christie Bryant and Mycal Smith are new faces on the team. The women signed National Letters of Intent a few months ago and will add depth to the team.
Bryant played for Merced College in Merced, Calif. As a freshman, she earned All-Central Valley Conference First Team honors and led the team with 15.9 points and 11 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Cook said he expects good things from the sophomore transfer.
Smith comes from Memphis, Tenn. and played basketball at Ridgeway High School. During her time there, she was a four-year letter winner and was selected to the Tennessee District All-Tournament Team. Cook said he feels confident with the addition of Smith.
“She is a very strong player on the low block and will be a great asset to our team in her freshman year,” Cook said.
Back with the team is Dominique Washington, who tailled 141 total rebounds, all conference guard Katherine Plummer and seven other juniors and seniors.
