A Nicholls student died 12 hours after he was in a single-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon. Ben Meyer, general studies junior from Napoleonville, was headed north on Hwy. 308 near the Supreme Bridge when his 1990 Acura Legend crossed the center line and left the roadway to the left at 12:09 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police.
The vehicle went into a ditch and struck a cement-covered culvert in a private driveway.
Meyer, 23, was not wearing his seatbelt. He was taken to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center for treatment of critical injuries.
Police do not think alcohol was involved in the crash. “We’re just still waiting on the investigation to end (to find what caused the accident),” Matt Trahan, state police spokesman, said.
The funeral was Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church in Napoleonville.
Meyer will be remembered by many people on campus as a fun and friendly person.
“He was very outgoing and always made me laugh,” Brittany Cancienne, family and consumer studies junior from Donaldsonville, said. “He was very fun to be around.”
Cancienne said she met Meyer through a friend, and that he was always ready to do something spontaneous.
“He was just crazy, very outgoing, very nice to everyone and always trying to make people laugh,” Mack Chuilli, health and physical education junior from Metairie, said. He and Meyer were roommates for about two years.
“The summer before my junior year, he and another friend and I basically spent the whole summer together doing creative stuff at night, like bowling or renting movies. It was probably the best summer of my life,” Chuilli said.
He said Meyer taught Tae Kwon Do to children in Napoloeonville and that he had been taking Tae Kwon Do at Nicholls with Edward Lee.
“He was always down for anything, and he wanted to be liked by everyone,” Chuilli said.
“And he was.”
