Saturday’s Homecoming game at John L. Guidry Stadium opened with No. 13-ranked Colonels taking on No. 6-ranked McNeese State. The Colonels football team played with intensity for 4 quarters but fell, losing with a final score of 28-7. The Colonels started the game with solid play and moved the ball downfield 81 yards in 8 plays to be first to light up the scoreboard. Running back Zack Morgan ran for 22 yards for a touchdown. Alex Romero made the next point, giving the Colonels a 7-0 lead with 9:15 left in the first quarter.
Later in the quarter, quarterback Derric Fourroux answered back by scoring a one-yard touchdown run. After field goal kicker Blake Bercegeay’s extra point, the game was tied 7-7 at the 3:08 mark.
The rest of the game, the Colonels moved the ball well but had some miscues and failed to score any more points.
Leading the Cowboys to victory was quarterback Derric Fourroux, who had 186 yards of total offense,;running back Kris Bush, with one touchdown and 101 yards rushing and free safety Brant Linde, who had a game-high of 9.5 tackles.
It was not until the end of the second quarter that Fourroux connected with tight end Brandon Broussard for a one-yard touchdown pass. Bercegeay kicked the ball through the uprights to give the Cowboys a 14-7 halftime lead.
Not long into the second half, Fourroux connected with Bush with a 17-yard touchdown pass in the end zone. Bercegeay’s extra point increased the Cowboy’s lead to 21-7.
At the 5:09 mark of the third quarter, Bush ran for a touchdown five yards out.
Colonel players Zack Morgan, Joseph Tobias, Vincent Montgomery and Kareem Moore showed persistence throughout the game. Morgan had 55 yards rushing on four carries, while Tobias had 45 yards rushing. Quarterback Montgomery threw 92 yards and 38 yards rushing, and Moore had 7.5 tackles.
The Colonels will be traveling to play Central Arkansas on Oct. 27. Kick off is set for 6 p.m.
