Women’s basketball junior Alisha Allen scored her 1,000th career point during the Nicholls State 83-74 victory over Texas State on Feb. 4.
The Colonels defeated the west division leaders with Allen finishing the game with 17 points and a new record to her name.
Allen is the 10th Colonel to eclipse the 1,000 point mark and did so in front of a special crowd despite being on the road.
“I was excited to get the win against a really good team and make that mark with my parents in the stands,” Allen said. “It feels really great to make an achievement like that, especially in front of my family.”
Allen headed into the game needing 13 points to reach the plateau. With 11:08 left in the game, she scored a layup to achieve the milestone. However, it was not until the bus ride home from Texas State that Allen was told she had hit her mark.
“They didn’t even announce it, at least I didn’t hear it,” Allen said. “I found out on the bus from the girls that I had done it.”
As a forward for the Colonels, Allen says her biggest strength is getting to the basket.
“I like to work hard every day, but I would say getting to the basket and taking what the defense gives me is my biggest strength,” Allen said.
As for her 1,000 career points, Allen attributes her recent success to hard work.
“It was just something that was achieved,” Allen said. “I work hard every day so it was just something that kind of came with all the hard work.”
On Feb. 8, Allen was recognized before a home crowd prior to tipoff against Stephen F. Austin for joining the 1,000 point club.
This season, Allen leads the team in rebounds (149), offensive rebounds (56) and blocked shots (25). She is second on the team in scoring (322), field goals made (129) and free throws made (59).
Currently sitting at third place in the Southland Conference standings with a 6-5 record in conference play, the Colonel players are excited about their success.
“For a while our program hasn’t had a winning atmosphere,” Allen said. “It’s exciting to be here and be a part of making history.”
Allen attributes her personal success, as well as the team’s success so far this year to her teammates and coaching staff’s relationship.
“We’re a very supportive team,” Allen said. “Everyone is trying to achieve the same goal here so it’s really helpful for all of us in that aspect.”
Allen and the Colonels return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 when they tip off against the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners in Stopher Gym at 1:00 p.m.
