This week’s review goes to one of my favorite bands. After seeing them live at The Highground venue in Metairie about one year ago, Memphis May Fire has become very popular in the post-hardcore scene. Their current album, “Sleepwalking,” was released in July 2009 and is the subject of this week’s review. The reason I am choosing this album is because the band will be releasing a new E.P. titled “Between the Lies” on Nov. 2.The opening track is called “North Atlantic vs. North Carolina” and is my personal favorite. It starts with a sick guitar riff combined with the amazing vocals of Matty Mullins. He-along with Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens-is one of few vocalists that combines beautiful, clean vocals with awesome screaming. While I do like my fair share of heavy metal, I like to hear bands mix it up with clean vocals every now and then.
The fourth track, titled “Ghost in the Mirror,” has a great memorable chorus that I promise will be stuck in your head all day. This track is also featured on the Saw IV movie soundtrack.
The other highlights of the album are “A Giant in A Giants World,” “You’re Lucky It’s Not 1692” (which is one of the most clever song names ever made) and “Been There, Done That.”
When I saw the band live, I had the privilege of meeting Mullins. We talked for a half hour about TOMS shoes, their tour, and he even gave me a copy of “Sleepwalking” for half price!
Memphis May Fire’s debut album, “Sleepwalking” earns a 4.5 out of 5. It is an absolutely great album that I know I will listen to for a long time. Sadly, they have not returned to Louisiana since last year, but I will definitely be attending their next show in the area. You can also be ready for the new E.P. to be reviewed as soon as it comes out.
