David dethroned Goliath Saturday night as Cain Velasquez defeated Brock Lesnar to become the new heavyweight champion.Velasquez’s performance was the most impressive performance I’ve ever seen in MMA, and maybe in any sport ever.
Velasquez defeated the lean and ripped Lesnar.
Velasquez finished Lesnar in the first round with a TKO after stuffing a takedown from Lesnar by taking him down and out-striking him on the feet.
Stuffing Lesnar’s takedown is like an offensive lineman stopping a 280-pound defensive end running full speed at him.
I knew Velasquez had the advantage standing up but I had no idea he would dominate the wrestling aspect of the fight, too.
Whenever Lesnar would somehow manage to get Velasquez to the ground, Velasquez would pop right back up and advance to a better position.
The biggest shock of the fight to me was when he managed to take Lesnar down.
Like Lesnar, Velasquez has an impressive wrestling resume, but I thought for sure the size of Lesnar would be all the advantage the defending champ needed to dominate the wrestling in the fight.
I was wrong. The bottom line is Lesnar doesn’t like to take a lot of punches, and once a heavyweight with the power of Velasquez puts those hands on him, he curls up into the fetal position.
After Velasquez rocked Lesnar and continued to beat on him, Lesnar verbally submitted and history was made.
The atmosphere for the fight was ridiculous. The crowd was in a constant roar the whole fight and got louder as Velasquez got closer to victory.
The new champ’s next challenger is perhaps the most feared man in the division, Junior Dos Santos.
Dos Santos has never lost in the UFC and has had the hardest road to a title shot since Chuck Liddell back in the earlier UFC’s.
Dos Santos has won six straight fights in the UFC, five of them by stoppage.
Dos Santos has beaten the likes of Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, Mirko Cro Cop, Gilbert Yvel, Gabriel Gonzaga and Roy Nelson.
Dos Santos is considered by most to have the best hands in the heavyweight division and will be a huge test for Velasquez.
Velasquez is no slouch standing on his feet either, which makes me super excited about this fight.
This meeting has all the makings to be an instant classic, and if the past two heavyweight fights have any indication on how this fight will be, it’s guaranteed to be exciting.
I feel like we have entered a new era in MMA with Velasquez winning the title, and Velasquez could be champion for a very long time.
The heavyweight division is stacked, but it’s going to take an amazing performance to give Velasquez his first MMA loss.
