The Nicholls softball team went 1-4 at their opening tournament in Hammond this weekend.
The Colonels fought back at the bottom of the seventh in their season opener when they scored four runs. They were unable to come back from an early deficit and lost 9-8 against Northern Illinois Friday night.
Although Nicholls scored the first four runs of the game, NIU rallied back and scored three runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth with no outs, the Colonels had the bases loaded. The Huskies, however, closed out the inning after a fly ball hit to right field turned into a triple play.
Trailing 9-4 in the seventh, senior third baseman Ashley Ray led off the inning with a homerun, followed by a single hit by Kat Angeles. Soon after, freshmen second baseman Rachel Moore hit a three-run homer bringing the score 9-8. With two outs, sophomore outfielder Lauren Jolivette made it on base after being hit by a pitch, but the Huskies forced a fly out to end the game.
Following this game, Ray set a Nicholls record with a 15 game hitting streak.
The Colonels dropped their doubleheader on Saturday losing to Tennessee Martin 5-3 and Troy 3-0.
The Colonels took an early lead in the bottom of the third against UT-Martin when the Skyhawks decided to pitch around Ray and loaded the bases with two outs. Freshmen shortstop Paige Miller then delivered a single to put the Colonels up 2-0.
UT-Martin fought back with two runs in the fourth to even the score and soon added two more runs in the fifth to take the lead.
Trailing 5-2 in the seventh, Moore hit her second homerun of the season bringing the score 5-3. However, the Colonels were unable to keep the momentum going and lost 5-3 to the Skyhawks.
Following their loss against UT-Martin, Troy held the Colonels to only three hits. Troy got an early lead after scoring two runs in the first and one more in the bottom of the third. The Colonels were unable to score and lost 3-0.
The Colonels picked up their first win of the season, defeating Akron 5-1 Sunday afternoon.
Ray gave the Colonels an early lead in the first with a sacrifice fly making the score 1-0. In the bottom of the second with two runners on base, Jolivette picked up her first career home run giving the Colonels a 4-0 lead. After Akron scored a run in the fourth, Ray lead off the fifth with her third home run of the season. The Colonels defeated the Zips 5-1.
Sophomore Katie Moulder struck out a career-high of seven batters against Akron.
The Colonels dropped their final game of the weekend losing 10-2 against Jackson State.
The Colonels scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut their deficit 5-2, but Jackson State came back with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth, which earned them a 10-2 run-ruled victory.
