November is a month that people can start wearing pullovers, feasting on Thanksgiving meals and the time for people not to shave for a cause.
This time of the year is when you may see many guys with strangely hairy beards, but not all of them do it to be lazy. Some do it to bring awareness and funds to prostate cancer research.
Just as October is known as breast cancer awareness month, November focuses on another form of cancer by having guys and some girls show awareness for the cause by not shaving or donating to research.
Movember is a foundation that put this into effect to help donate funds for prostate cancer patients and research, testicular cancer and to fund the research of mental health challenges.
According to Movember’s website, the Movember foundation is focused on education and awareness, living with and beyond cancer, mental illnesses and staying mentally healthy and research to achieve the vision of an everlasting impact for men’s health.
Movember.com is a website where users can donate to cancer research. In Movember, “mo bros” are men who do not shave and show their awareness for cancer. “Mo sistas” are the women who participate by raising funds and encouraging the men in their lives to participate in the cause.
Tate Aucoin, freshmen from Labadieville, La., said, “My high school always wanted me to shave, so I don’t now and I do it for cancer awareness.”
Movember started in 2003, and since then, has gained $147 million with over 1.1 million participants. Since 2003, the funds have sometimes doubled that were gained from the year before. According to Movember.com, donations fund over 560 programs.
All the funds that are raised go to men’s health programs that combat against prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health challenges.
Some men grow beards and do not shave because November is when you can go without shaving and society will accept it. Some other men grow beards and also donate, but some students do not even know about Movember where you can donate.
Alex Bourgeois, freshmen from Cut Off, said, “I don’t raise money for the program, and I was unaware they had one, so I pretty much do it just because.”
At the end of the month “mo bros” and “mo sistas” have Movember events to celebrate their journey. Some of the Movember participants throw their own parties, but most of them attend one of the official parties around the world. Participants who donate $100 to $200 can receive one or two free tickets to the party.
