Every match but two was decided in two sets for the Colonels tennis team leading them to a home victory in Saturday’s match-up against Xavier University.The Colonels led in impressive singles wins by junior Eric Fisher, sophomore Radu Ionescu, junior Phenyo Matong and senior Vlad Popa, which helped the Colonels improve to 1-1 this season.
Ionescu defeated his opponent in a 6-1, 6-2 match, while Popa and Fisher defeated their opponents in a 6-2, 6-1 match. Matong fought harder to obtain a 6-2, 7-5 win.
Matong and Fisher proved to work well as a team when they defeated their opponents with an 8-2 doubles victory.
The Lady Colonels followed in the men’s footsteps also pulling through for a win, increasing their record to a perfect 2-0.
Bringing in big wins were sophomores Sumana Kalyanasundram and Florina Nosca.
Kalyanasundram defeated her opponent in a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Nosca, like Matong, had to fight for her victory and clenched a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 win over her opponent.
Kalyanasundram and sophomore Natalia Zamora also clenched their doubles victory in an 8-2 victory over their opponents.
On Tuesday, Ionescu was honored as the Southland Conference Player of the Week for men’s tennis. Nosca was honored with honorable mention.
