One of the greatest fighters on the planet will defend his title tonight when Jose Aldo defends his featherweight belt against No. 1 contender Manny Gamburyan. WEC will take center stage tonight as they will showcase one of the greatest fight cards to ever be put on cable television.
WEC’s best fighter, Aldo, is coming off of a very impressive victory over Urijah Faber and has won 10 fights in a row.
Aldo takes on a tough opponent in Gamburyan. Gamburyan came to the WEC from the UFC after appearing on “The Ultimate Fighter.”
Gamburyan is riding a three-fight win streak, with his latest victory coming over former featherweight champion Mike Brown.
Gamburyan knocked Brown out in the first round and earned himself a title shot against Aldo. Gamburyan needs to find a way to get this fight to the ground because if it stays standing, Aldo has a significant advantage.
The co-main event on the card is a rematch between two guys who have no love lost, Jamie Varner takes on Donald Cerrone.
These two fought in January 2009, and it was a brutal fight. Cerrone and Varner traded punches for five rounds until Cerrone delivered an illegal knee to Varner.
Varner couldn’t continue and regained his championship. The illegal knee was controversial because it looked like it just barely grazed Varner, but Varner said he couldn’t continue.
This ignited the feud as Cerrone was upset about the way things played out, and both men have done plenty of trash talking since then.
Finally, these two are set to square off again in what should be an absolute war. Out of all the great fights on the night, this is the fight that I find myself drooling over.
Another big fight will feature the return of Miguel Torres as he takes on Charlie Valencia. Valencia is on a three-fight win streak in the WEC, while Torres is coming off of a submission loss to Joseph Benavidez.
The loss required Torres to undergo surgery for a nasty cut.
For the first time in his career, Torres is on a two-fight losing streak.
I look for Torres to come out and try to reclaim the title as one of the best fighters the WEC has ever seen. I don’t think he’ll hold anything back, and that should make for an exciting bout.
The first two fights on the card feature two fighters who had the fight of the decade last April, Chan Sung Jung and Leonard Garcia.
Unfortunately, these two aren’t fighting each other, but at least they’re on the same card. Jung is fighting a talented fighter in George Roop, who is coming off of a draw to Garcia, while Garcia is taking on Mark Hominick, who is riding a three-fight win streak.
Garcia is one of my favorite fighters to watch because of the way he throws caution to the wind and always puts on a great show. Expect fireworks out of both of these fights.
These fights should be very entertaining and should be a great way to kick off the night. I’m pumped for these fights, and if you know anything about the WEC, you know that nobody puts on a show like them. The fights begin at 8 p.m. on Versus.
