It’s almost here. UFC 121 will go down on Saturday with Brock Lesnar defending his heavyweight title against undefeated Cain Velasquez.I have been waiting for Velasquez to take on Lesnar since February when Velasquez knocked out Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round.
I love to watch Velasquez fight because he sets a relentless pace that very few heavyweights can keep up with in the ring.
Lesnar will gas before Velasquez does, but Lesnar holds a tremendous size advantage over Velasquez.
Lesnar will outweigh Velasquez come fight night by about 35 pounds.
A lot of fight fans believe that Lesnar will take Velasquez to the mat and impose his will to claim victory.
While this is likely, Velasquez’s wrestling isn’t that bad either.
It’s obvious that Lesnar holds the size advantage and wants to take this one to the floor, but must get it to the mat before Velasquez touches his chin with his fists.
While Lesnar’s advantage will be his size and strength, Velasquez will have the advantage on his feet with quickness and cardio.
If Velasquez gets Lesnar in the same position that Carwin had him, Velasquez will finish the fight because this guy doesn’t gas.
The co-main event on the card features Jake Shields making his UFC debut against a very game Martin Kampmann.
Shields is coming off of a dominant win over Dan Henderson on Strikeforce’s last show on CBS, while Kampmann is coming off of an impressive victory over Paulo Thiago.
This is an important fight for the welterweight division, as the winner will join the likes of Jon Fitch as the new No. 1 contender for the welterweight title.
Another big fight will feature Diego Sanchez taking on Thiago.
I forgot to mention that this card is stacked. This should be a very entertaining fight as both guys are coming off losses and should put everything on the line.
I’m still a big believer in Thiago. I said before his last fight against Kampmann that I believe Thiago is a future champion.
Everyone loses in MMA, and I believe Thiago will be back on the right track Saturday night when he faces Sanchez.
As for Sanchez, if he loses this fight that would mark his third loss in a row and which could mean he’ll get cut.
Another featured fight on the card is Tito Ortiz taking on Matt Hamill in a classic teacher vs. student match up.
Ortiz coached season three of “The Ultimate Fighter,” and Hamill was his first pick on his team.
Unlike Ortiz’s past fights, there wasn?t any trash talking before this one, as Ortiz has openly stated he respects Hamill.
This will be a battle between two great wrestlers, and usually when that happens their wrestling nullifies each other, and it turns into a stand-up war. If it does turn into a stand-up war, Hamill has the advantage and should get the victory.
A bout that will kick the PPV off will be between Brendan Schaub and Gabriel Gonzaga.
Ever since losing to Roy Nelson, Schaub has been on a roll and has been knocking people out left and right.
Now he faces another knockout artist in Gonzaga.
This should be a really fun fight between two heavyweight contenders, and I believe Schaub will add another knockout to his collection.
UFC 121 is a loaded card, and with Lesnar in the main event, one thing is always certain-intense drama.
