Relate, a bi-monthly open-mic series of themed public expression created to encourage students and faculty to communicate, will begin next Thursday at 7 p.m. in the snack bar area of the Student Union.
The idea to form Relate came from the NAACP’s release therapy events held in the past, which called for powerful expression in front of an audience.
“Relate is an opportunity to open up a dialogue and to communicate what certain words and ideas mean to us,” Daniel Ruiz, Nicholls Players coordinator and speech instructor, said.
Participants are encouraged to express themselves in any way, whether it is spoken-word poetry, music or dance.
“We want to open up the forms of expression to whatever way you feel you can say what the theme means to you,” Ruiz said.
Each session is themed to unify the performances into one common feeling. Performers can explore topics like love, freedom, madness and pressure.
“We want to continue what Nicholls State is all about…you’re not just a number. You have a name, and you’re a unique individual,” Farren Clark, speech instructor, said.
The first theme is love, and participants are encouraged to explore the ups and downs of love and relationships just days before Valentine’s Day on Feb. 10.
Freedom, which is placed at the cusp of Black History Month, will feature Asia Rainey, a spoken-word poet, actress and writer from New Orleans.
An emcee will be present at each event to keep performances flowing. Spontaneous participation from audience members is expected and makes up a key part of what Relate is all about.
“Even if you’re going to come to watch, bring something with you because you may be compelled to get up there and do something,” Ruiz said.
There are no prior requirements necessary to participate.
“We want to see all extremes: those who may feel very nervous and also those who have been waiting for an opportunity to do something like this,” Clark said.
More special guests are expected to attend future Relate sessions.
