They have five CDs to date, a movie-at least with the same name, and they are the 2009 Alternative Press Band Of The Year. Ladies and gentlemen-The Devil Wears Prada. It is really no secret that TDWP is one of the biggest names in metalcore. They are known for their heavy breakdowns combined with memorable choruses and epic piano and synth riffs. The band has released five records, each one surpassing the other. This week’s review is on their latest release-“Zombie – EP.”
The theme of the EP was based on lead vocalist Mike Hranica’s “obsession” with the undead. “Zombie” includes sound clips of gunshots and chainsaws as well as a radio broadcast describing a zombie apocalypse. The record has a very eerie feel to it-which is exactly what Hranica was going for.
“The whole thing is just completely based upon zombies; Last fall, I was on a real zombie kick.” Hranica said, “I read ‘The Zombie Survival Guide’ by Max Brooks, and I thought, ‘What if we made a zombie song?’ All it took was me just saying that to the band, and we had our hearts set on doing this EP.”
This is by far the fastest, hardest and darkest record that the band has ever released. Critics often say that TDWP “is not heavy enough,” but this EP proves to the world that they know what they are doing.
I give The Devil Wears Prada’s Zombie – EP a 5 out of 5 because the band achieved exactly what they were trying to do-create a heavier album while still keeping their same sound. For any fan of metalcore, as well as old TDWP fans, this EP is definitely worth the $5.99 on iTunes. Check out The Devil Wears Prada on MySpace at www.myspace.com/tdwp.
