Rachel Yezak, junior of mass communications prepares for volleyball season after an impressive sophomore year. Last year, Yezak started all 32 matches and appeared in 121 of 123 sets. Yezak recorded 13 contests with 10 or more kills including her season high of 16 kills against Stephen F. Austin on October 9, 2009.
In her sophomore year, Yezak was among the team leaders in kills with 266, block assists with 58, total blocks with 63 and many others.
Yezak also recorded a season-high of 24 digs on November 3, 2009 against Southeastern Louisiana, and a season-high of seven total blocks on October 6, 2009 against Jackson State.
Yezak took some time to answer some questions after winning a close game against Southeastern.
Q: Was Volleyball always important to you as a kid?
A: Volleyball has always been my sport. I have played since the 6th grade. I’ve loved it ever since, and I knew I was going to play in college.
Q: Being originally from Houston, what made you decide to come to Nicholls?
A: The change. I wanted to be away from home, but not too far. It’s only a six-hour drive.
Q: What does the season look like for this year?
A: The team looks absolutely amazing. We’re having a lot of fun and we’re kicking butt.
Q: Who do you think will be the toughest challenge this year?
A: Texas State will definitely be our toughest challenge. Everyone will challenge us, but I really think we can go undefeated.
Q: What game are you looking forward to the most?
A: I would have to say Lamar. We’re ready to shut them up.
Q: How do you get pumped before a game?
A: We rock out in the locker room to music. We turn it all the way up and have dance parties.
Q: Do you have any superstitions?
A: I hit butts on the court. We have butt and back pats all the time. It keeps us winning.
Q: What is your favorite part of being on the team?
A: I love the girls and their want for the win.
Q: Aside from volleyball, what are your hobbies?
A: I like tennis, and I love school.
Q: What are your plans after graduating?
A: I will probably move back to Texas with mom and dad.
Q: Who do you look up to as an athlete?
A: Misty May for sure! She dominated sand volleyball and I adore her!
