FREE! FREE! FREE! Most people who saw this would probably wonder what was free, as any college student would.
The stereotypical college student is portrayed as basically broke. People think that whenever something is offered for free, students would happily jump on the opportunity to find out exactly what is for free.
Free food for instance! Most college students will go to almost any event that offers free food. After all, food can be pretty expensive.
Now, let’s take this beyond the sense of food. If someone were to offer a free ticket to a Louisiana State University football game, I’d put money on the fact that a rush would ensue to get the ticket.
However, at home games, Nicholls offers its students free admission. Herein lies the crux of the problem. There is so little to do in Thibodaux, yet, so many pass up spending a warm, wonderful afternoon watching their team play.
Why is it that most of our students, who admit there is nothing to do in the little town of Thibodaux, do not take this opportunity to attend a sporting event for free?
I asked myself this question throughout the last home football game against Sam Houston. I sat in the student section and was amazed to see how little of our student population was there. After all, it was a free event.
While we are not defending National Champions, we still have a great team with great players. The team does not win every game, but hey, neither does LSU. The game and the excitement of football are the same and both teams have spectacular players. I guess the only difference is that our colors are not purple and gold, our record is not as spectacular, we do not have to pay to attend out home games and we are not LSU.
Sporting teams need their fans to back them up, especially their student sections. LSU’s student section is the heart of where cheering and support comes from. It is what brings LSU football players to victory.
However, at our last home game, our student section was lacking one thing: students. While students were in attendance, the cheering was few and far between and it seemed more a social event than an event where you are supposed to support and cheer your team to victory. We could have the same experience with a student section if students came to games, besides just the Homecoming game.
You may be thinking to yourself, “Well the football team only has one more home game left.” So, attend that home game and make it the biggest student section cheering their team to victory. Also, both men’s and women’s basketball teams start their season this week so pack the gym with students.
Instead of sitting at home or attending another school’s athletic event, attend your school’s sporting event – for free.
