Our beloved Colonels have won their last two games, and we all know who to thank for that – me, of course. I know some of you are thinking that maybe it was the hard work and considerable talent of the football players, and I can see how you would, so let me plead my case.
During football season, we at The Nicholls Worth do our sports picks – where we say who we think will win out of several different professional and college football games. Because I always root for the home team, the first four weeks I picked Nicholls to win in all of their games.
I noticed, however, that they weren’t winning. As a concerned fan I started thinking about what I could do to help the situation.
I knew the problem couldn’t be with the players. After all, Ladarius Webb, defensive back for the Colonels, has won just about every award a college athlete can have, except maybe Coach of the Year (that’s probably next year).
While whispering in the back of one my classes with a to-be-unnamed football player, I figured out what the problem was – me.
Look at my sports pick record and you will understand what I mean – I am currently 6-14. Exactly what you would expect from the features editor. I know less than nothing about college football-it’s too many teams to learn.
My “suckiness” at college football was affecting my team and so I made the dramatic decision to stop picking Nicholls to win.
It was an experiment that I didn’t have too much faith in, until I got a text late Friday night: “We won!”
I was happy until Tuesday, when I had to pick for Homecoming. I knew there would be backlash if I didn’t choose Nicholls for the second week in a row. I desperately wanted Nicholls to win, but I knew that if I picked them they would not. So, with a heavy heart, I picked Central Arkansas.
There are many people who don’t understand my devotion and love. They think I’m picking against the team because I want them to lose. To all the naysayers, I say nay. Without a doubt I want Nicholls to win and I think my record speaks for itself.
When I pick against them, Nicholls is 2-0. I only wish I had stopped picking them sooner. To all of my football players please know and understand that although it may say another team underneath my name, my heart is screaming “Nicholls!
