With the help of the Student Government Association and the Biology Society, G.R.E.E.N. will be placing recycle bins in Gouaux Hall with the intention of eventually making the entire campus environmentally friendly.”We want this to be a ‘green’ University,” Alex Morris, family and consumer sciences senior from Lockport and G.R.E.E.N. president, said.
Stephanie Coleman, biology senior from Prairieville and member of the Biology Society, said the club needed a place to start because it did not have the resources needed to get going. G.R.E.E.N.’s first project is to transform Gouaux Hall into a more environmentally friendly place by placing recycling bins in the building.
Gouaux primarily holds biology classes.
“Helping the environment should be a primary goal of biologists,” Coleman said.
Coleman said the next step was to find financial support. G.R.E.E.N. turned to the SGA for help. In March of 2010, SGA granted the club $169.57 to help buy two new recycle bins to be placed in Gouaux Hall.
The 44-gallon bins will hold plastic, tin cans, cardboard and paper. The bins will be emptied weekly by volunteers from the Biology Society and G.R.E.E.N. and transported to a recycling facility by the University.
“Gouaux Hall was a good area to start because of the excessive use of paper in the science and nursing classes,” Brittany Taraba, marketing senior from Monroe and SGA President, said.
A record of the recycled items will be taken and given to the University, Coleman said.
“Hopefully this will raise awareness of the importance of recycling,” Coleman said. “We could use all the help we can get. We’re asking everyone to recycle so that we can help the planet.
