Well it’s fall again and that can only mean one thing: football season. This off-season was a pretty interesting one to say the least as we saw teams make key moves to better, or in some case worsen, their chances to win the Lombardi trophy.
Although my opinions might be worth the same as a blade of grass to some people, I still had to come up with something in this editorial. I decided to make my Top 10 list of teams and Super Bowl predictions.
10- The Green Bay Packers start my Top 10 since I think they will be good enough to win their division once again. With Brett Favre calling the shots, it is certain that this team will find a way to win and make it into the playoffs. The Packers have a solid offense led by pro bowl running back Ahman Green, who rushed for 1,883 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. If he stays healthy, there is no reason to think he won’t better that performance this year.
9- The Dallas Cowboys are slowly starting to return to their old form under head coach Bill Parcells. As much as I am not a Cowboys fan, I must give them credit. This team has gone from pretenders to contenders in the course of only two years. The acquisitions of Keyshawn Johnson, Eddie George and Vinny Testaverde could have in fact been the smartest of the off-season. Despite the loss of Quincy Carter, the Cowboys should still compete with a talented array of wide receivers and a defense led by Roy Williams, which just seems to be getting better. Look for this team to secure a wild card spot in the playoffs.
8- I have our beloved New Orleans Saints. The Saints could easily be the No. 1 team in the league, but many question marks loom for this club. The main concern for the Saints is in the secondary. With no real superstar at cornerback, the Saints may have a hard time defending the pass. Offensively, the Saints have the most talented than any team in the league. I do see Deuce McAllister having another 1000-yard season. The key for the Saints is going to rest on the arm of their smiling quarterback Aaron Brooks. If Brooks is consistent on a week-to-week basis, then I see no reason why the Saints cannot contend. Anything less than a good performance will result in another “wait till next year” season for the Saints. In a make or break year, I do see the Saints making the playoffs and maybe contending for a division title.
7- The Baltimore Ravens look to contend for a division title with a dominating defense. As we all know, Deion Sanders is returning to play for the Ravens, and if Prime Time can return to his original form when he first retired, there is no reason to think they can’t contend. The only question mark on this squad is a lack of receiving. The Ravens had Terrell Owens for a brief two days before losing him to the Eagles. If Jamal Lewis can solve his legal problems and their receivers step up, Ray Lewis and the boys will find themselves in the playoffs.
6- The New England Patriots, defending Super Bowl champions, have the majority of their starters from last season. With the acquisition of Corey Dillon, there is no reason to think this team won’t be at the top of the league once again. Until somebody beats them, they could still be considered the best team.
5- The Carolina Panthers had a miracle season last year, and with a solid defense led by Julius Peppers and an above-average offense led by Louisiana’s own Jake Delhomme, I see the Panthers contending once again. The only question mark was the loss of four of five starters on the offensive line. If these guys come together, Carolina will be contending for the division crown once again.
4- The Kansas City Chiefs come in strong, led by Priest Holmes. This team’s offense is great but questions still remain unanswered on defense. This team will go as far as the legs of Priest Holmes and the arm of Trent Green allow them. The Chiefs do win a tough division but may sputter in the playoffs once again.
The top three teams are fairly equal and can go to anyone. I feel the Eagles, Colts and Seahawks will be the best teams to beat this year.
3- The Philedelphia Eagles added Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens, who gives Donavon McNabb a fierce target. The defense is strong but the running game took a hard hit with Correll Buckhalter being lost for the season. The Eagles will win the division title and contend for the Super Bowl title and may finally overcome losing three straight times in the conference title game.
2- The Seattle Seahawks are on the rise this year and if running back Shawn Alexander has a solid year, this could be their year. The Seahawks will win the division with no real competition other than the Rams, who are declining. How far they go in the playoffs will be based on the arm of Matt Hasselback and the legs of Shawn Alexander. This team will make the playoffs, but will go no further than the conference championship.
1- I think the Indianapolis Colts are the best team in the league with many weapons. Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Edgerrin James are the most dangerous trio in the League. This could be their year after a couple of early exits in the postseason in the past three years.
I think the Super Bowl Champions will be the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts will defeat the Eagles to win their first title since the days when quarterback Johnny Unitas led them in Baltimore.
Although I am likely to be totally wrong about these picks, I still feel it necessary to share my thoughts with our faithful readers. Hopefully by now you’ve stopped laughing at these picks and will just wait and see at the end of the year how wrong I am. Needless to say, it should be an interesting season.
