Everything was looking good early for the Colonels last Saturday, but the football team came up short 50-39. The team got off to a fast 19-0 first half lead.
The defense produced a first drive interception by junior linebacker Garrick Spain and he returned it to the Colonel goal line which produced a one yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Vincent Montgomery.
The early scoring continued with a 62-yard pass and score from Montgomery to junior wide receiver Antonio Robinson. Senior safety Ladarius Webb added another punt return touchdown of 75 yards.
The Colonels had 331 yards of total offense and Stephen F. Austin had 525 yards of total offense.
The Colonels headed into halftime with a 29-14 lead. Things changed in the second half.
The offense was stagnant, and the defense became vulnerable to pass efficiency by Lumberjack quarterback Jeremy Moses. Furthermore, two late minute interceptions thrown by Montgomery were both returned for touchdowns and sealed a Colonel loss.
The second half struggles have been a consistent theme so far this season for the Colonels.
“I think it’s a number of things head coach Jay Thomas said. “It’s depth, a little bit. Size, maybe a little bit. We wear down some in the second half.”
Of the inability to secure a win Spain said, “We can taste it. We just have to swallow it.”
The Colonels will focus their attention on McNeese State for their game Saturday at 7 p.m. in Lake Charles. The Cowboys are ranked 13th nationally.
