The Lady Colonels volleyball team faced both Lamar University and Sam Houston State this past week. Both matches were determined by a fifth game with the Lady Colonels coming up short. The Lady Colonels are now 2-5 in conference play. “I’m really proud of our girls tonight,” head coach Chris Laird said in reference to the match against Lamar. “They really competed and you can tell how much of a home team we are.”
Though proud of the effort against Lamar, coach Laird commented on the team’s lack of poise in the clutch after their match with Sam Houston.
“Tonight was a tough loss,” Laird said. “We just can’t keep missing serves and making errors at crucial times and killing our momentum. We seem to get tight at crunch time.”
Although the 13-women roster includes four freshman and two transfer students, freshman Dani Daigle said their losses were not due to a lack of team chemistry.
“We’ve gelled well from the get-go,” Daigle said. “As for the last two losses, it just came down to team wide mistakes and little mental errors.”
Last night, the Lady Colonels played Southeastern Louisiana for the second time this season, having already defeated them once.
The match was hosted in Stopher Gym where the Lady Colonels participated in Dig for the Cure, which is a nationwide fund-raiser whereby fans pledge money for every dig their team records on the night.
“We’re very excited to host Southeastern (Louisiana) in this Dig for the Cure match,” Laird said before the game. “This is a great opportunity for volleyball teams across the country to raise donations and awareness for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. October is breast cancer awareness month, so we’re happy to host this event with our travel partner.”
As of press time, the game results as well as the amount of money donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation are unavailable.
The Lady Colonels play Texas-Arlington at home Saturday, Oct. 25.
