The Nicholls’ Student Programing Association held its annual ping-pong tournament at the racquetball courts in Bollinger Memorial Student Union on Sept. 24 at 4 p.m. This year the tournament had a variety of participants, not only men competed, but there were also two women competitors, Brittany Fusilier, a freshman from St. Martinville, and Stacey Goss, a junior from Houma majoring in business administration.
Two international students, Chris Hernandez, a junior from Guatemala majoring in general studies, and Wolfgang Mendez, a sophomore from Venezuela majoring in business administration, went to show their talents.
The finalists of the evening were the two international students, Hernandez and Mendez.
After three intense sets, the winner was the returning champ, Mendez.
Mendez said that he participated in the tournament last year and traveled to Houston to compete in the regional tournament.
“I had so much fun there,” Mendez said. “There were a lot of people at the competition, and many were, what seemed like, professional teams. They had wind suites and all kinds of fancy things, but they were good. I wanted to do it again this year, so I signed up, hoping for the best, to win.”
Mendez said she was excited to win again.
“It feels great,” Mendez said. “I’m excited to see what this year is going to be like in Dallas.”
Each year the SPA hosts a ping-pong tournament in which the winner travels and competes at the regional level.
Last year the regional tournament was held in Houston and this year in Dallas. Regional tournaments are held in the spring.
Competitors are challenged to play in three sets, the first player to win the first two rounds moves on in the bracket.
