Nicholls’ softball, tennis and track and field teams competed in the Southland Conference Tournaments to receive top honors last month.
Softball
The Lady Colonels took the SLC Runner-Up honors for the first time since 2003, awarded for many incredible strides achieved during the 2008 SLC Championship. The Lady Colonels finished the season 31-28 overall and 15-14 in conference.
Nicholls defeated No. 3 Texas-San Antonio and No. 2 Texas-Arlington, which was an overachievement, considering the Lady Colonels entered the tournament as No. 6 and were only expected to beat No. 7 Sam Houston State. This accomplishment is a reflection of the tremendous effort given by the team members. Senior Krystalin Ensminger, the Lady Colonels’ pitcher, gave an outstanding performance on the field as well as senior Amy Thibodeaux’s two homeruns and senior Kat Harrell’s performance at the plate.
“From top to bottom, we played true team ball this weekend,” Coach Jenny Parson said. “Our entire team was dedicated in every aspect of the game to win. I just can’t say enough in how proud I am of this team.”
Track and Field
Nicholls placed high in several events at the Southland Conference outdoor track and field championships that took place the weekend of May 10. Many Nicholls students achieved high goals at the meet and were recognized for them.
Sophomore Imma Kosgei took fourth place in the 1,500 meter run. Senior Charlotte Everhardt placed fifth in the 1,000 meter.
The relay team of freshman Alycia Johnson, sophomore Tiffany Nall, senior La-Nation McCray and sophomore Ashley Carpenter finished seventh, while the team of senior Leshea Jenkins, McCray, sophomore Marion Chebet and Carpenter took eighth place.
Sophomore Chelsea Dockrey won eighth place in the high jump. Chebet took ninth place in the 800 meter.
In the preliminaries, Nall held the 10th place position in the 100 meter dash. Also, Carpenter ran a team-best in the prelims.
“We had a very good season, and I feel like we made a lot of progress as I went on,” Coach Scott Williamson said.
Tennis
Nicholls’ state men’s tennis team finished its season 13-8.
At the Southland Conference men’s tennis tournament hosted by Stephen F. Austin, Nicholls entered at No. 6 but lost in the first round to the No. 3-ranked Texas-San Antonio.
Sophomore Radu Ionescu was named the SLC’s Newcomer of the Year.
