Lady Colonels soccer team is getting ready to kick off a new season with new talent and hopes of a fresh start and upset any team that comes their way. The team hopes it can turn around last year’s 2-17-1 record with the amount of new talent and promise the team is showing so far.
“Our record last season did not show the talent that we had on our team. We faltered at the end of our season, which is our conference play,” head coach Cindy Piper said.
The team was also dissatisfied with their record, especially junior Caitlyn Donegan.
“It was very disappointing,” Donegan said. “We would have liked to win more games than we did.”
The soccer team added 12 new players to the roster who will be able to help reach the goals set before them.
“It is very weird because each season is different. You have to reteach people how to play in college,” Donegan said. “It is different than playing in high school, and each season is more interesting because of all the new players we have.”
Donegan said she would like to see the team make it into the SLC conference tournament and win more games during this season.
“We would also like to be able to upset more teams and show our full potential,” Donegan said.
In order to achieve this goal, Piper said, the team needs to gain confidence.
“If we start to do our job early on, then we will be able to compete in our conference. The SEC conference is huge because it is the best people we will play against. We need to get better in every game we play,” Piper said.
The team is able to have more options of players in different positions with the amount of people coming onto the team.
“It changes the dynamic of the team,” Piper said.
Being able to bond as a team is a key element in playing well together on the field during competition, Piper said.
Piper said the team is very close-knit and a much improved compared to last year’s, which only helps them for the better.
“It is great to have more fresh legs that can come in and play,” Donegan said, “It is interesting having new players, but it turns around our program.”
The team is rigorously practicing for the upcoming season with their first game scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow against Southern University in Baton Rouge.
