An undergraduate student at the University of Michigan decided to take a break from summer school to go on a vacation that we could only imagine. While some students went across state lines or the nearest beach, Michael Phelps decided to go to Beijing.
Not only did Phelps get a chance to visit the beauty of China, but he also just happened to make worldwide history on his trip.
The dream of the 23-year-old Phelps began with one gold medal and didn’t seem to stop there. Phelps continued his journey through Beijing by obtaining the most ever gold medals in an Olympic competition of eight.
The most amazing thing about Phelps is that he broke his own records in his swimming competitions.
Phelps surpassed Mark Spitz’s record of eight gold medals won in the 1972 Olympics. Spitz was also a swimmer.
Phelps has proved that dreams are achievable and that success is unlimited.
Even his competitors gave up knowing that Phelps is unbeatable. It feels as if the skill of swimming was born with him.
Phelps’ accomplishments are more than just an athletic achievement. His story is a testament to the value of hard work and determination.
Many times we allow adversity and the things that seem beyond our reach to defeat us before we have a chance to fight them.
Swimming is a strenuous activity that tests one’s physical strength and endurance.
I’m sure Phelps knew that winning gold in all eight of his events would be difficult, but I’m also sure he knew it was possible. His physical talents aren’t solely responsible for his becoming the Olympic record holder for most golds – accompanying that is the mental strength that was a catalyst to his record performances. Those who doubt and don’t believe in the impossible should think about Phelps and his fantastic summer vacation.
