Many of us go from class to class each day just grabbing a quick snack in between classes when we get hungry without thinking about nutritional value or healthy choices, but what about for those of us who actually want to maintain a healthy lifestyle? At Nicholls we have a variety of food choices from the Union, Cafe a la Carte in Powell Hall and the cafeteria. Let’s take a tour!
If you go to Jazzman’s, you’re not given many healthy options besides what we like; brownies, pastries and blueberry scones. But in the morning something is better than nothing.
As I mentioned when we began school, the most important meal is breakfast, which kick starts your metabolism. Look right next to Jazzman’s you’ll notice a cooler with a variety of yogurts, fruits, turkey and ham wraps and you’ll even find salads.
Pair a salad with a lower fat dressing or olive oil and you have a healthful lunch. Semolina’s Grill offers a few choices for breakfast and lunch also.
For breakfast you should try to avoid the croissants and biscuits. They are loaded with butter, adding lots of fat, to what looks like a simple egg and cheese sandwich. On your burgers for lunch, opt for light mayo and veggies to help fill you up.
At Chick-fil-A the chicken sandwich’s aren’t a bad choice, but do remember that the chicken is fried – so try to eat fried, processed foods only occasionally. Chick-fil-A also offers salads. They have a variety of mixed greens with usually a type of lean meat. These salads are great options.
Cafe a la Carte is a small room in Powell Hall for students to relax between classes and have refreshments. The cafe offers a variety of healthful choices like in the Union’s cooler. It has turkey wraps, salads, yogurt and fruit.
The cooler also supplies milk and, like the Student Union, they have two percent milk. For adults it’s recommended we drink skim milk, but any milk is a healthier option than soft drinks.
Lets take a look at the cafeteria. The cafeteria is a very enjoyable, relaxing atmosphere. The selected entree’s and themed cuisine stations offer great choices because they are more balanced, nutritional meals, rather than a burger or pizza.
But even better nutritional value is when you turn around and find the soup and salad bar. The fresh vegetables and fruits that are arranged on the bar may not be as appealing to someone who doesn’t really like vegetables, but hopefully everyone likes some type of fruit and vegetable. The salad bar also has low-fat, low-calorie dressings, as well as, oil, vinegar and balsamic dressings for those who opt for the natural dressings.
Eating healthy isn’t a problem when eating on campus; it’s informing everyone that the choices are available.
